JULY 6

Local Heroes

Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

1 PETER 2:17, NIV

One of my husband’s favorite acts of kindness we’ve done with our church community was when we put on a barbecue at our local fire department for Father’s Day. We wanted it to serve as a thank-you for all the hard work the firefighters do to serve our community, especially on holidays when others don’t have to work. We invited our local police officers to stop by as well.

It was a beautiful day for a barbecue, with the sun shining and a warm breeze blowing. As we talked with the firefighters, served them food, and thanked them for their service, they showed us their trucks, let the kids play with the hoses, and talked about what it’s like to be a firefighter. My kids met local heroes that they continued to talk about all the way home, and I left feeling completely grateful for the men and women in my community who step up to help others, often putting themselves in danger to do so. I could not believe how kind they were to us. It gave me an even greater respect for all that they do every day.

Have you ever thanked a public servant in your community? We all have people around us who are serving selflessly. Things often run so smoothly that it can be easy to forget they are even there behind the scenes, helping to make our communities safe. The Bible tells us to show proper respect to everyone, and taking the time to thank your city’s public servants is one way to do just that.

If you are blessed to live in a city or area with public services that improve your life, thank God for them—and look for ways to extend kindness and respect to these hardworking men and women.
